If you are writing from multiple viewpoints then it should be third person. If you are doing one person and really want the reader in close to your character, do first person. But remember that you can only have things happen from that one persons visual and mental perspectives.

Some historical writers are using third person but adding a first person flavor by opening each chapter with primary source-based personal journal entries.

Good point Ken. In my historical inspirational novel I blend parts of that in the second section of the book working title called Interlude.
