Dr. Janet L. Pierce has a PhD in English: Composition and TESOL. She taught ESL for 27 years and has designed and taught online classes teaching professionals how to instruct English language learners as well as written ESL curriculum for school districts in western Pennsylvania.

Teaching English Learners- Cultural Implications, Communications, Connections, and Curriculum” explains how to teach people of all ages to speak English.

This is an excellent resource for every teacher considering or about to start teaching English learners. In this book you learn about the characteristics and needs of the multicultural EL. You examine types of forms used to assess and document the educational process; teaching strategies for English language development; how to use Multiple Intelligences in the ELD classroom and develop thematic units of instruction that adhere to the standards and benchmarks in order to write your own curriculum assessments at each proficiency level. For public school teachers, there is an additional chapter on how to create learning objectives for your ELs.

I can also talk about my writing process and how to handle detours in life and in writing. The detours in life help prepare you for the difficult times you face and equip you with skills you never anticipated. My detour from the age of 13 writing mysteries, to the age of 71 have provided me with unique experiences. I’ve ridden and written about going on a Wagon train ride and facing a tornado, to flying in a hot air balloon to trace a school district’s history, to writing instructional manuals, textbooks, my dissertation for my PhD in English which looked at the use of visuals and the placement of people and things to determine how a person sees oneself. I’ve written newspaper articles, poems that won poetry awards and more. I’ve helped non-profits gain donors through feature articles I’ve written. I learned about photography and editing and researching. All of the skills I’ve learned along the way have culminated in skills I used in my Observations at the Bird Feeder devotional book. It is never a straight arrow path, but one filled with interesting detours I would love to share with you.
